New PAD Screening Guidelines!

The new 2011 ACCF/AHA Guidelines for the Management of Patients with Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) were recently released from the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association. They recommend that the ABI (ankle/brachial index) exam should be used to establish lower extremity PAD diagnosis all individuals

  • Age 65 and older
  • Age 50 years or older with a history of smoking or diabetes
  • Who have leg pain with walking
  • Who have non-healing wounds

Peripheral Arterial Disease, also known as PAD, affects 8-12 million people in the United States, and is a common, yet serious, disease that raises the risk of heart attack and stroke.

PAD develops when the arteries are clogged with plaque made of cholesterol or other fatty materials, eventually resulting in severe leg pain or even amputation. However, almost half of people with PAD don’t even know they have it because they do not have symptoms!

The ABI test (ankle/brachial index) is a screening exam that is used for the diagnosis of PAD. It is a painless ultrasound exam that involves comparing the blood pressure in the ankle to the blood pressure in the arm.

Futura Health Screening offers this affordable screening exam for the low price of $45. No doctor’s referral is necessary. Call (425) 398-7797 or (866) 486-4882 to schedule a screening. If you have symptoms, such as leg pain or non-healing wounds, please ask your doctor about ordering this exam.

Vascular Health Screenings Offered in West Seattle for Stroke Awareness Month

Are you are over 50, have high blood pressure, are a past or current smoker, or have high cholesterol? If so, then you are at risk for vascular disease, such as stroke, aneurysms and peripheral arterial disease (leg artery blockage).

Futura Health Screening offers accurate and affordable screening exams every Wednesday at Jefferson Square in West Seattle, located at 4700 42nd Ave SW, Suite 488. Strokes occur when a blood vessel carrying oxygen and vital nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or ruptures. The presence of carotid artery blockage, also known as stenosis, is the leading cause of strokes.

An estimated 20 to 30 million Americans are at risk for vascular diseases such as stroke, peripheral arterial disease and aortic aneurysm. Preventative screening allows for early detection and treatment before a catastrophic event, such as a stroke or aneurysm rupture.

The screening exams include carotid artery ultrasound to detect stroke-causing plaque, abdominal aortic ultrasound to detect an aneurysm, and ankle brachial index (ABI) to detect peripheral arterial disease in the legs. The screenings are painless and take about 15 minutes to perform. All you need to do is take off your shoes and socks!

Screenings are $45 each or $125 for all three. No doctor referral is necessary. Pre-registration is required. Call (425) 398-7797 to schedule a screening.

Futura Health Screening is the only ICAVL accredited non-invasive vascular screening program in Washington State. Futura Health Screening is a division of Pacific Vascular, Inc., the largest provider of vascular ultrasound testing in the Northwest.

Futura Health Screening Urges Awareness of Stroke Symptoms During May, National Stroke Awareness Month

May is National Stroke Awareness month. In order to understand your risk factors and the symptoms of stroke, Futura Health Screening offers preventative stroke and vascular screenings every Tuesday in Kirkland at 13118 121st Way NE, Suite 104 and every Wednesday at Jefferson Square in West Seattle, located at 4700 42nd Ave SW, Suite 488.

Stroke is a leading cause of death and serious, long-term disability in the United States. According to the American Stroke Association, approximately 795,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke each year and about 75% of all strokes occur without warning symptoms.

“Time is crucial in the treatment of stroke, as on average, every 40 seconds someone in the United States has a stroke and roughly every four minutes someone dies from a stroke,” said Julie Menkens, Director of Futura Health Screening. “The earlier a stroke is recognized and the patient receives medical attention, the greater chance of recovery.”

Strokes occur when a blood vessel carrying oxygen and vital nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or ruptures.  When this occurs, part of the brain is deprived of blood and oxygen, destroying millions of valuable nerve cells within minutes. The resulting damage can lead to significant disability including paralysis, speech problems and emotional difficulties.

“If you suspect a stroke, remember the word FAST – F-A-S-T,” said Menkens.  “F is for face – is your face drooping? A is for arms – can you lift both arms? S is for speech – are you slurring your words? And T is for time, call 9-1-1 immediately because with stroke, time lost, is brain lost.”

 The primary stroke symptoms include:

  • Sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the face or facial drooping
  • Sudden numbness or weakness in an arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  • Sudden severe headache with no known cause

Treatment may be available if you get to the emergency room immediately upon recognition of stroke symptoms. Leading a healthy lifestyle, including lowering risk factors like high blood pressure and weight, can also help reduce your stroke risk.

Futura Provides PAD Screening to West Seattle Seniors

The seniors of West Seattle were provided free PAD screening exams to check for leg artery blockages on March 29, 2011 at the Senior Center of West Seattle. Twenty-five participated in the free screening offer; 4 with abnormal results (16%), indicating the presence of peripheral arterial disease, or PAD.

If PAD is left untreated, it can lead to severe leg pain which may require surgery or amputation. It can also be an indication of serious disease elsewhere in the body. According to the American Heart Association, about eight million people have PAD, making them four to five times more likely to die of a heart attack or stroke.

Incidental findings included 56% with hypertension, showing that even with medication, hypertension is not being controlled. Uncontrolled hypertension can injure or kill you by damaging your arteries, heart and other organs.

Results were discussed with all of the participants, along with risk factor modification to further reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, such as stroke and heart attack. All were encouraged to talk to their doctor about the findings.

The health fair participants were very appreciative to Futura Health Screening for providing such a valuable service to their community.

Free Vascular Health Screenings at West Seattle Health Fair on Tuesday, March 29th

March 15, 2011 – If you are over 50, have high blood pressure, are a past or current smoker, or have high cholesterol, then you are at risk for vascular disease, such as stroke, aneurysms and peripheral arterial disease (leg artery blockage).

From 10 AM to 1 PM on March 29, Futura Health Screening will be offering free peripheral arterial disease (PAD) screening at the West Seattle Senior Center Health Fair, located at 4217 SW Oregon St. in West Seattle.

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is one of the most common yet least diagnosed forms of vascular disease.  If left untreated, PAD can lead to surgery and in severe cases, can lead to amputation. It can also be an indication of serious disease elsewhere in the body. According to the American Heart Association, about eight million people have PAD and these individuals are four to five times more likely to die of heart attacks and strokes as those without the disease.

If you cannot attend the free PAD screening event, screenings are available every Wednesday morning in West Seattle and every Tuesday morning in Kirkland. Futura Health Screening offers low-cost, painless, and accurate ultrasound screenings to check for blockages in the arteries and aortic aneurysms.

Screening exams include carotid artery ultrasound to detect stroke-causing plaque, abdominal aortic ultrasound to detect an aneurysm, and ankle brachial index (ABI) to detect peripheral arterial disease in the legs. Screenings are $45 each or $125 for all three.

Carotid artery disease occurs when fatty deposits, or plaque, build up along the walls of the carotid arteries.  The carotid arteries run along either side of the neck and deliver blood from the heart to the brain and head. The buildup of plaque in these arteries blocks the blood supply to the brain and increases risk of stroke.

An abdominal aortic aneurysm, also known as AAA (pronounced “triple A”), is a swelling or bulge that weakens the walls of the aorta.  A rupture to the aorta has an 80 percent fatality rate and the vast majority of people with aneurysms are never diagnosed until they experience a fatal rupture. If an aneurysm is detected and treated electively the risk of its fatality is much lower.

Futura Health Screening is the first and only ICAVL accredited non-invasive vascular screening program in Washington State. Futura Health Screening is a division of Pacific Vascular, Inc., the largest provider of vascular ultrasound testing in the Northwest.

To schedule your screening, call (425) 398-7797 or (866) 486-4882. You can also take a personal risk assessment at futurahealthscreening.com.
